Jesus Is Condemned To Death

The first scene is in the courtyard of the Palace of the Atonia. Jesus still wears the mock purple robe put on him in anger by King Herod Antipas.

Now Pontius Pilate questions him asking, "Are you a King?" And Jesus answers, "My kingdom is not an earthly one, thou sayest that I am a king. To this end I was born and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the Truth. Everyone that is of the truth hearest my voice."

At this point Pilate said to the people, "I can find no fault in him at all."

Pilate then gave the mob a choice of who should go free. Jesus Christ or Jesus Barabas, a man in prison for riot and murder. But, inflamed by the high priest Kaphus and other members of the Sanhedron, the masses demand the death of the Nazarene.

The woman in the foreground showing alarm and despair is Pilate's wife, Claudia Propula, who because of a dream, warned him not to convict Jesus. She later left Pilate and became a Christian.

But now there is no turning back. The mob is shouting for the death of Jesus. The vicious blood-lust is visible on their faces as they scream, "Crucify him!, crucify him!"
