When it became apparent that Jesus was becoming rapidly weaker and might not survive the rest of the journey to Calvary, Abenadar took matters into his own hands. It was his duty to deliver a live criminal for crucifixion, not a dead one, or suffer the wrath of his Roman superiors.
Jesus must not die on the way to Calvary so ,surveying the crowd, Abenadar chose from the bystanders, Simon of Cyrene, a powerful farmer in from the country to shoulder the cross.
